Use the primary riding position in situations such as this where it would not be safe for you to be passed. Watch out for mud on the road and other hazardous surfaces.

More substantial works sometimes require the closure of a road in one or both directions, and the diversionary route can add significant extra distance, perhaps via busier roads. In most cases, cyclists are still able to pass a closure, if only by dismounting, but it can be a gamble to ignore a diversion sign if you do not know what’s ahead. If possible, ask someone living locally. In the country, look carefully at a map for the likely location of a closure. If there is a bridge which might have fallen or a new road under construction, your path is more likely to be blocked. Otherwise, you will probably be able to proceed. However, you should not ride against the flow on a road signed for one-way working.
